A locale between Mt. Sinai and Hazeroth (identified with modern Rueis el-Ebeirij). It was there that the Israelites died by plague as they consumed quail rained down upon them by Yahweh in answer to their complaints. The plague punished their lusting after the meat, fish, and other delicacies they had enjoyed in Egypt (Num 11:31-34; Num 1-6:31; Num 33:16-17; Deut 9:22).
