The second of Levi’s three sons (Gen 46:11), grandfather of Moses and Aaron (Exod 6:16-20), and, according to (1Chr 6:22-28), the ancestor of Samuel. Although Gershon was Levi’s firstborn, the narrative sections (Num 3-4) often treat Kohath and his descendants as the most important levitical family. Kohath’s descendants are sometimes mentioned before Gershon’s descendants (Num 4:34-45; 1Chr 15:5). The Kohathites had the most important function in the tabernacle—disassembling and transporting the Holy of Holies (Num 4:4-20). According to 1 Chronicles, they also prepared the showbread (1Chr 9:32) and their descendants included Asaph and Heman, two important Temple singers (1Chr 6:31-43).
