Lud

Lud (Luhd)

A name given to the son of Shem (Gen 10:22). In its plural form, Ludim, it designates a group of people (Isa 66:19; Ezek 30:5). There are apparently two groups designated by the name. One group is associated with peoples in Asia Minor (Isa 66:19; possibly also Ezek 27:1) and would probably include the “sons” of Shem (Gen 10:22), who were Semitic people. The second group appears to be centered in North Africa (Ezek 30:5; Jer 46:9) and is probably to be connected with the Ludim (Gen 10:13) who are said to be “sons” of Mizraim (Egypt). The fact that they appear in the biblical record as mercenary soldiers in the army of Tyre (Ezek 27:10; Ezek 30:5) and as skilled bowmen (Jer 46:9) might account for their wide dispersion.
