  • faith without works

    The idea that belief, without accompanying change in behavior, can bring about salvation; criticized in the Epistle of James.

  • fallow

    to leave unfarmed

  • family god

    A minor deity personally attached to a particular family; often represented by venerated idols (cf. Genesis 31:19-35).

  • feminist

    Of or related to a social conviction in the equality of women.

  • Fertile Crescent

    The crescent-shaped region stretching from Egypt to Mesopotamia. Its fertile land made agriculture easy, making it the location of many early human developments.

  • First Amendment

    The first article in the United States Bill of Rights; it prohibits the government from instituting a state religion or infringing on freedom of speech.

  • First Jewish Revolt

    The revolt of the Jews against the Roman Empire between 66 and 73 C.E., the result of which was the destruction of Jerusalem and the second temple.

  • first Jewish war

    A rebellion by the Jewish people against their Roman occupation, lasting from 66-73 CE and culminating with the destruction of the Temple.

  • Five Scrolls

    A designation for the five shortest books of the Hagiographa (Heb. Ketuvim): Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Esther.

  • flagellum

    A flail that could only be used by a pharaoh and was a symbol of royal power.
