Yehud in the Persian Period
Map of the province of Yehud in the Persian period according to biblical sources and archaeological finds (after E. Stern).
Archaeologists take careful notes at each site they excavate and publish their notes. By analyzing the artifacts and features they find in the field and comparing the physical evidence to the texts, scholars are able to create hypotheses about the past based on evidence. In this example, the distribution of seals throughout the kingdom of Judah helps scholars to determine where the borders of the kingdom were at the time the seals were in use. This can be compared to the biblical description of the kingdom in order to reconstruct a more accurate historical picture.
The Persian name for the province including the territory of Judah, with its capital in Jerusalem.
