Frederic Leighton, Elisha Raising the Son of the Shunammite, 1881. Oil on canvas, Leighton House Museum, The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Culture Service, England.
This painting depicts Elisha bringing the son of the Shunammite back from death. Leighton painted the scene from a very low perspective, level with the action. This emphasizes the way Elisha raises the boy from the dead—"his mouth upon his mouth, his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands"—and draws the audience into the moment (2 Kgs 4:34).
