Donatello, The Prophet Jeremiah, 1423. Marble, Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Florence, Italy.
Donatello was an early Renaissance sculptor from Florence. He created five statues of prophets for the campanile of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. His Jeremiah is characterized by strong portrait details. Donatello was well known for his knowledge of ancient sculptural conventions and he preferred not to follow the Greek model of idealized proportions. Like classic Roman portraits, he brought a sense of realism and naturalism into his work. This Jeremiah stands proudly like a classic roman statesman… or a Medici politician of the fifteenth century.
