Justice, 2010.
A pop-up event is a temporary show of artworks—visual, musical, or performance—that highlight a particular issue. The Manifest Equality pop-up event focused on civil rights issues surrounding California’s Proposition 8, which prohibited marriage between same-sex partners in the state. In this mural by street artists El Mac, Retna, and Kofie, a blindfolded woman holding scales and a sword evokes ancient Greek and Roman images of the goddess of justice. The artists created the 20x100-foot mural in a single week in March 2010. It was painted over in beige three weeks after its completion.
