Mary Magdalene Announces the Resurrection

Mary Magdalene Announces the Resurrection, St. Albans Psalter, 12th Century, Cathedral Library at Hildesheim.

St. Albans Psalter is known as one of the greatest examples of English Romanesque art.. The manuscript is made up of a calendar, forty full-page miniatures, an illustrated Alexis text, and a Psalter. Sometime between 1119  and 1146 the psalter was made for Christina of Markyate who lived  as an anchorite for a time at the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban. The image of Mary Magdalene announcing the resurrections to the other disciples is so rare as to be almost unique. There was a  shift at this time toward a more intimate and emotional spirituality, a shift in which women played a significant role and which transformed traditional assumptions concerning the nature and use of visual images in religious observance.

The St. Albans Psalter is kept at the St. Godehard Church in Hildesheim, Germany. The Psalter ended up in Germany when English Catholics fled persecution during and after the English Civil War (1642–1651) and took refuge at the monastery of Lamspringe sometime after 1643.
