Jean Bondol and Nicolas Bataille, Angers Apocalypse Tapestry, Whore of Babylon section, 1373-1380, Musée de la Tapisserie, Château d'Angers, Angers.
The Angers Apocalypse Tapestry is a set of tapestries made in six sections. Each section is seventy-eight feet wide by twenty feet high and the whole is divided into ninety different scenes. It is unknown how these huge tapestries were displayed. Each scene is in a vignette of landscape or architecture alternating red and blue backgrounds. In this scene John and the angel are walking into a landscape scene of the Whore of Babylon "seated on many waters." This Whore of Babylon scene illustrates the common usage in western art of a naked woman with a mirror to represent sin; especially the sins of luxury, vanity, and pride.
