Obed-edom


Oh´bid-ee´duhm; Heb., “worshiper of Edom”

1 The name of a Gittite in whose house David stored the Ark of God for three months. During the transport of the Ark from Baale-judah (or Kiriath-jearim) to Jerusalem, Uzzah, one of David’s men, touched the Ark and died. Unwilling to continue with the Ark into Jerusalem, David left it in the house of Obed-edom, who was then blessed because of its presence (2Sam 6:6-12; 1Chr 13:13-14). 2 One of the Levite gatekeepers at the tent of meeting who, along with others, led with lyres the procession that brought the Ark of God from the home of Obed-edom the Gittite to Jerusalem (1Chr 15:18; 1Chr 15:21). When the Ark was set inside the tent in Jerusalem, Obed-edom the Levite was appointed one of the ministers of the Ark (1Chr 16:5).
