From Gk. euangelion, “good news”

In the NT, the good news preached by Jesus that the kingdom of God is at hand (Mark 1:14-15) and the good news of what God has done on behalf of humanity in Christ (Rom 1:1-4). The background for the word is found in the Greek version of the OT (LXX), where the verb “to bring good news” or “to announce good news” appears rather than the noun (Isa 40:9; Isa 41:27; Isa 52:7; Isa 61:1).
